Marketing Professional – On most days I can be found creating messaging for Smart Work and IBM. Of course I don’t do this in a vacuum – I’m lucky to be surrounded by folks that are way smarter than me. Please note that this blog is in no way related to or sponsored by Smart Work or IBM. The opinions and views expressed in this blog are entirely the creations of little green men that control my computer while I sleep.
Technology gear-head – I’ve architected many business technology infrastructures that are alive and kicking today – mostly in banking. Thank heavens I wasn’t the one actually implementing them. Got a Computing degree way back and some professional certifications followed.
Master of Business Administration. I ran the gauntlet and received an MBA with specialization in marketing from the University of Liverpool. I learned three big things in graduate school:
- I’m not as smart as I thought I was – after reading an assignment for the fourth time and still being clueless about what you need to do, you start questioning your intelligence.
- As a complement to #1: You can do literally anything if you give it your best – figured this one out after realizing those assignments really were crazy, but you can still do them right.
- Coffee makes you pee a lot.
My dissertation generated quite a bit of interest. I’m really not inclined to rewrite it for submission to a journal as the folks at the university wanted; Here is a copy of the dissertation: Conducting Marketing Research with Amazon’s Mechanical Turk
Multinational. Not just in my name – I think and act in global ways: With an understanding of societies, economics, and politics. Against that mindset some events and regulations are literally a joke, and some others present interesting opportunities. I grew up in Argentina and moved to the US some ten years ago.
Daddy. I’ve got three girls and a new baby boy. I do enjoy them very much. You’ll probably notice my “lifestream” feed is full of family picture uploads. Here is a video of the latest arrival!
Learner. My wife made a comment that struck home – she said “you work hard at being smart”, pointing out that I don’t miss an opportunity to watch a documentary, read a book, listen to an audiobook and I’m constantly on the lookout for knowledge and insight.
Scientist. I love science, these past few years I’ve been enjoying the behavioral sciences a lot, and it’s reflected in my bookshelf. I used to have shelves full of networking, programming and systems management books. Now I’ve got behavioral psychology everywhere. I read and listen to audiobooks fanatically – There isn’t a moment when I’m driving or doing chores that I don’t have one of my audiobooks going, and I always keep my books handy in case of some down-time. Check out my bookshelves further below or at Shelfari.
Gamer. Lately I haven’t had time for much gaming, but I’ve paid my dues – collecting thousands of hours in front of everything and own pretty much one of every gaming device. I enjoy retrogaming quite a bit. If its a Role-Playing game, I know about it. I’ve played Ultima Online for many years and still have an account since 1998.
Tinkerer and experimenter. I’m extremely curious and sometimes a little mischievous, which propels me to run little (and not so little) experiments to figure out “what-ifs”. My little experiments usually fund one another, which is always nice. One of my last big experiments was PlayVaul
t and PlaySend where I played around with migrating players and currencies between MMORPGs and creating an in-game delivery service. Currently my favorite sandboxes are The Amazon Mechanical Turk and Scriptlance along with WordPress and the internet at large. In case you’re wondering, this blog is one of those little experiments that took a life of its own – Started in 2002 it has been an interesting and rewarding little project which I’m delighted to be sharing with you.
My superpower: Can stun and convert all nay-sayers within earshot. Immune to negative vibes, bad moods and destructive criticism.
