Guess what happened with the previous post… Bumped into a neat name and went for it. I gotta love the no-nonsense approach of Network Solutions or other registrars.
Went to GoDaddy and while they have rock-bottom prices, they also come across as bottom-feeders looking for me to click on the wrong button and buy a useless pixellated security blanket. The sheer amount of junk -literally junk – they hawk at you when you try to check out has to be experienced. I’d say about 60% of it is just thin air – like a “Business Registration” which gets auto-added, the “Expiration protection” (like they’re going to forget to let you know you need to renew) or the “Certified Domain” seal which is just a graphic you can display on your site to show everyone just how clueless you are. Then there is 5% useful stuff and another 35% of junk services you can get either free or much better anywhere else, like e-mail.
Here’s the sample badge of n00b-ness they offer for a few bucks:
At the end of the day they both register domains. But GoDaddy’s checkout feels a little like walking through a busy street on a bad neighborhood, you gotta keep your eyes peeled, and when you’re done you check your wallet to see if its still there.
