Facebook Ads

Interesting ad appeared on the right… So Scott is a good friend who works at Dell, he must have signed up as a “Fan” of Dell’s offers. So Dell takes their picture, adds an offer and serves it to friends of Scott possibly using other info to select which deal and which ‘fan’. Perhaps showing female friends to males if available, similar age ranges. Here it is:

Clever, lets break it down:

1) Uses Social Validation (showing others use this – my friend)
2) Uses Liking and Friendship (My friend)
3) Uses scarcity twice – says the deal is ‘exclusive’
4) Then gives a phony deadline for the offer – in this case the deal expires *tomorrow* (today must be my lucky day!)
5) Uses a hidden anxiety question. Says “Stay connected!”. Connectedness must be good, staying is good. Losing/leaving is bad. The non-axiety version of this would be “Get Connected!”.
